Single Entrepreneur Spotlight

Andy Theimer

Milwaukee, WI

Founder of RecipeBridge.com

.

1. My business and how I got started:

Sitting at a coffee shop several years ago with a co-worker. We were thinking of problems to solve and hit upon the fact that most people who use the Internet to find recipes (over 80 million annually) go through multiple websites and Google searches before finding the right one.

2. Why my product/service is better than the competition:

New cooking and recipe websites appear every week but I feel we’ve found something different. We took something that people are already doing; searching for recipes online, and made the experience much better.

3. A typical day for me:

I get up around 7am and head for the super-automatic coffee machine, best investment ever! Typically I spend the first hour reading up on the technology and online advertising space then it’s replying to emails. The rest of my day is a mix of writing out technical specs for new features, reaching out to potential partners, and setting up meetings.

4. What I love most about my business:

The online cooking market is gigantic and growing faster ever year.  We have the opportunity to shake it up and show people a different approach to finding recipes on the web and on upcoming ‘pad’ devices.

5. I’m cool because:

I can only assume “geeky intellectual” is the new cool for 2010? I have a passion for finding and trying new things from mountain climbing to technology. I like being unpredictable and hearing my mom say “you’re doing what?” when I tell her what I’m up to.

6. If my friends nominated me for an award, it would be “Most Likely to…”:

Haha…. hopefully they wouldn’t be able to predict that J

7. A movie made about my life it would be named:

“Maybe this time…..”

8. Strangest thing you’d find in my fridge, wallet or closet:

My bowtie collection.

9. Personal qualities I admire most in others:

I admire the ability to focus precisely on one thing and becoming excellent at it. I’ve always been more of the “jack-of-all-trades” type and really admire people who do one thing and do it better than anyone else.

10. Three things I hope to accomplish in the next five years:

1. Travel to Cambodia
2. Move to another state
3. Sell off a company
4. + 5. TBD

Do you ever hear voices? If you’re wandering through a casino in A.C., taking in a museum, or listening to a radio advertisement for your local grocery store, you could be hearing the voice of Tricia Basanyi. At 34, Tricia has made a name for herself (or for her voice, rather) doing voiceover work for the likes of Dole, Caterpillar and Verizon Wireless, among others.

Communications degree graduate? Nope. After realizing college wasn’t working for her, the former Psychology major turned to a (yawn) accounts payable job to pay the bills. At 24, a light bulb went off and Tricia turned her passion for media into an entry-level internship with a radio station, going on to receive her own afternoon program and doing voiceover gigs on the side, while still working her accounting 9-5.

After four years, Tricia’s part-time hobby was viable enough to become her full-time business. Active on networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, she credits several projects per week to effective use of social media. Click here to listen to a sampling of her work, and if you start to hear a voice at the Taj Mahal…well, lets just hope it’s Tricia.

1. Where is the strangest place we can hear your voice?

Ummmm I’d rather not tell you the STRANGEST place;) But, I can tell you that I’m the voice for the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City and I do the audio tours for the Miami MetroZoo and a few other parks in Florida.

2. Why do you prefer voiceover acting versus television/film acting?

Because you can be anyone you want to be! On camera you’re limited to your own looks, but when you only have audio the audience’s imagination is a huge advantage. Plus, when you do a job you’re not so proud of (see answer to #1) you get to deny it! haha - When you’re on camera it’s harder to convince people you have an identical twin you didn’t know about.

3. Has the down economy affected the amount of voiceover work you receive? Or, have businesses turned to radio as a cheaper means of communicating?

Yes, it’s affected it, but in a good way. I’m busier than ever! Businesses still need to advertise. I give a few more “discounts” these days than before but there’s no shortage of work by any stretch of the imagination. You just have to know where to look and, of course, network, network, network.

4. What do businesses look for most when shopping for a “voice” to sell their products?

Well, to be honest a lot of it is personal preference. How do you pick which shirt to buy out of 10 different choices? We each have different tastes. I will say one thing though, it’s NOT just the voice itself. Someone could have a fantastic voice but sound like they’re reading when they do a commercial. We all know that’s not a good thing. On the other hand, many people with “average” sounding voices are making a killing in this business because they know how to sound natural and believable. So a good amount of it is talent and skill, knowing what the client wants and who your audience is that you’re “selling” to. Once you have a good amount of talent and voices to choose from, that’s when personal preference kicks in. Like choosing your favorite color. You can’t explain WHY you like it best, you just DO.

5. Has anyone in public ever recognized your voice?

Yes! A client that did not know I was the voice for the Trump Taj was walking along the boardwalk in Atlantic City over this past summer and heard my voice coming out of the loudspeaker, and immediately knew it was me. He called me and held his phone up to the speaker so I could hear myself coming through my own phone! It was a little weird. A few other similar stories like that over the past few years.

6. How do men react when they find out that you “do voices”? Give us the worst line you’ve heard.

You ready for this one? “Ohhhh, so you give good voice, huh?” HILARIOUS. In general, though, I find that guys find what I do quite fascinating even though I don’t do character voices. They always ask, “so where can I hear you?” They’re pretty curious and ask a lot of questions about it, and occasionally they’ll say “I’ve been told I have a great voice and should look into doing voiceovers but didn’t know how to get into the business.” Yeah dude, you and 50 million others. lol

7. Describe the person who would best complement both your life and your business.

My life is pretty fly-by-night. I like to travel a lot because I can and life is short. I work from anywhere and it would be cool to be with someone that had the same freedom. Doesn’t really matter what they do as long as they enjoy their work. I do think that it’s important to have your own interests outside of a relationship, if you do EVERYTHING together things get stale and boring pretty quickly. I do swing dancing, play poker, and play tennis with certain friends on a regular basis and it’s nice to have a guy that has his own interests too, so I can have my “me” time and he can have his.

8. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Well a LOT has changed in the past 5 years for me, so 10 years from now it should definitely be interesting. Professionally, I hope to have realized several projects in the voiceover industry that I’m working on right now, and they should be up and running smoothly by then. I’m an “idea” person so I imagine I’ll have some other things that I’ll be pursuing and trying to get finished, that as of right now I haven’t even thought of yet.
Personally, I’m not quite sure. Meeting someone would certainly be an enhancement but not a necessity. Children have never been a desire of mine, I have 2 nephews and a niece that I adore, and they keep me quite busy and satisfied on that front. I love my lifestyle but kids don’t fit into it very well, and I don’t see things changing anytime soon.

What do you do when you get a song stuck in your head? For serial entrepreneur and Shoestring Venture author Steve Monas, the answer is simple. Move to Hawaii.

Originally from the Ukraine, Steve and his family escaped religious oppression in the late 70’s, starting a new life in sunny San Diego. Not long after, the 8 year-old kid with a stuttering problem (who, incidentally, barely spoke English) could be found selling his wares on the streets of La Jolla. Undeterred by cultural and social obstacles that defined much of his early life, Steve went on to found and successfully run a multitude of businesses after his ambitious first days street vending in California.

There was the girls’ surf/skate/snow line “Lucky Girl”, a variety of internet-based businesses, books and websites on internet dating, and the recently published Shoestring Venture – The Startup Bible, co-authored with Richard Hooker, an in-depth resource guide for anyone on a budget brave enough to start a venture of their own. By cramming all the resources accumulated over his past decades in business, Steve is doing his best to satisfy one of his passions – helping other entrepreneurs.

In the time since I interviewed Steve just a couple weeks ago, he added another new business to his ever-growing entrepreneurial plate, a taxi service on the island of Kauai. Which brings us back to Hawaii and that song…..

1. You moved to Hawaii recently on a whim. Does that describe the way you have lived your life to this point?

I wish. Yes, I did pick an island and just moved. I wanted to do something different. It all started with a song by Ziggy Marley (Beach in Hawaii), then I saw the movie Benjamin Button, where he says:

“#8. For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.”

I believe in all these things. I looked at my life, realized that I had nothing holding me in a certain place. My book Shoestring Venture: The Startup Bible is being referenced at Rutgers Business University, and has amazing 5 star reviews on Amazon as being the most detailed and best business book that you will ever need. I am helping people, finally! Now I need to follow my own advice and work anywhere in the world (for now places that have a Costco). I love the island of Kauai. Everything has worked out well so far, and I am meeting some of the most interesting people that shine the Aloha spirit.

2. Why do you love helping other entrepreneurs? Wouldn’t life be easier with a little less competition?

It wouldn’t be as fun….Entrepreneurs are the innovators of the world. Without them, we, as humanity would not move ahead. I am happy that my purpose in life is to inspire others to be their best and produce their passion. There is nothing like seeing someone create something that makes people’s lives easier or more enjoyable.

3. Which venture were you most passionate about in the start-up phase? Which has given you the most lasting satisfaction?

I loved everything that I had tried. Whether it was writing a business plan about a coffeehouse / juicebar when I was 16 to having girls in the surf / skate / snow market get stoked on the Lucky Girl clothing that I had created. The satisfaction is getting praise for your product or service. The lasting satisfaction is knowing that even if it didn’t succeed, at least you tried, picked yourself up, dusted yourself off, learned from any mistakes, and start all over trying something new.

*This reminds me of a joke….Two kids get placed into two separate rooms both with a big pile of shit right in the middle. After 3 hours, the door gets opened to the first kid, and he is crying. The guy that opened the door asked the kid why he was crying? The kid answered that he was left for several hours with a big pile of shit. Next the guy opened the door to the other kid, and couldn’t see him anywhere. All of a sudden, a head pops out from the middle of the pile of shit, and the guy asked him “What are you doing in the pile of shit”, the kid answers “With all this shit, there has to be a horsy around here somewhere…” —being an optimist or resilient, is also a lasting satifisfaction, not everyone will hit a successful product or service on the first try.

4. Did your early childhood in the Ukraine affect the type of business person you have become?

I think that I was too young and living in a communist country. I was 5 years old when I moved to San Diego from Odessa, Ukraine. The year was 1979, and we had to be invited, we couldn’t just leave. The agreement between the US and Russia, was to help move Jews (from repression) to the United States. My dad was a Professor of Physics at the University of Odessa, and my mom was doing accounting for the railroad. It was not easy to get a Visa out, but after three years, we finally did.

5. Describe your first entrepreneurial experience and how it shaped your future.

Before my first entrepreneurial experience, I was playing around with my first computer, a Commodore 64. There was a limited amount of things that you could do with this 64K computer. I did have a Lemonade stand game. Then I put theory into practice, by selling lemonade. How American from an Émigré! That’s where the journey of success started and there is no destination…it is a blast!

6. What do you enjoy most about owning your own business?

What don’t I? Its just fun doing, creating, and evolving an idea until it becomes real. And if you can make a living doing something that you are passionate about, even better! The other thing, is hearing people praise your product. That’s huge.

7. Describe the person who would best complement both your life and your business.

I am not sure if I want someone who complements my business. I would rather be with someone who is passionate about doing whatever they enjoy doing. I live my life, she lives hers, and when we are together, it’s just magic. We are best friends. When we are not working, we enjoy doing similar things, by not even thinking about it. To much to ask for? Perhaps…It takes two to tango and compromise.

8. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Enjoying my entire family (wife, kids, parents, sister, etc.) and doing something different. I am not even going to speculate on what type of business or if I will be running for an office (or in an office), it’s not as fun. And the journey continues….

Normally when I interview entrepreneurs I take lots of notes. With Divya Gugnani, Founder and CEO of Behind the Burner, I finally gave up and just wrote down the word “enthusiasm”. The fast-talking 32 year-old Harvard MBA grad (turned chef turned entrepreneur) is enthusiastic about life, business, and most importantly, her love of cooking.

The daughter of immigrant parents on Long Island, Divya acquired her first skills (and passion for food) from the family’s live-in chef. Although her parents themselves did not cook, they often entertained, and a life-long culinary passion was born.

Aside from having a passion for food, Divya was also on track for a career in finance. While studying government economics at Cornell University, Divya took a cooking class, and at this point her dual interests in cooking and finance became parallel paths. After graduating from Cornell, she went on to work for Goldman Sachs as an investment banking analyst, but made time to attend the French Culinary Institute in NY. In the corporate world, she went on to become a technology venture capitalist, while at the same time working for free in restaurant kitchens and doing catering jobs, gaining real life experience as a culinary expert. Somewhere in the midst of cooking, advising startups, her involvement on multiple boards, and working in a VC firm, she managed to earn her MBA from Harvard.

Now running Behind the Burner, launched in November of 2008, Divya continues to feed her passions for both business and all things culinary. The initial success of the website (featuring tips, tricks, and techniques from your favorite chefs) is a true testament to the power of enthusiasm.

1. Please give us a quick introduction to Behind the Burner, what it offers, and how it differs from other cooking sites.

Behind the Burner has a network of over 250 culinary experts, particularly celebrity chefs who share their best tips, tricks and techniques in the form of short videos, articles and blogs. We also offer deals on the tools and ingredients experts recommend.

2. You describe your mother as an intellectual “renaissance woman” who discouraged you from learning to cook. What do you know about the experience of creating meals that she doesn’t?

My mom has a tremendous intellectual curiosity to learn about art, literature and gardening. She always felt being in the kitchen and cooking was a waste of time. It has taken her years to realize and respect that my intellectual curiosity spans to all things culinary. Searing, sautéing, shaking up cocktails and pouring wine, is both my high and my relaxation in life.

3. As Americans we are becoming more frugal and eating out less, but our taste for good food hasn’t changed. Do you credit the current economy for some of your early success?

I think our model works in any economy. Currently people are dining out less so they are cooking and entertaining more at home hence the desire to learn our tips, tricks and techniques. In a robust economy people dine out and enjoy nightlife more so, we still play to their voyeuristic desire to know what is going on behind the scenes at the hottest eateries, lounges and clubs.

4. You earned your culinary dues working various kitchen roles, often without pay. For someone just starting out, how important would you say is it to learn all aspects of a business or trade from the ground level up?

Today my role at Behind the Burner involves culinary, strategic, technology, financial, marketing and legal expertise. I developed and honed these skills as well as the most important—teamwork—in kitchens, board meetings, classrooms and at home. The best thing to do is be a sponge, learn everything you can from everyone around you. You never know when it will be useful.

5. Behind The Burner recently partnered with NBC to broadcast a cable show in the New York area. What is it all about and where can we see it?

Behind the Burner segments air on NBC New York Nonstop, which can be seen in 5.7 million households in the NY Metro area: NY, NJ, CT and Long Island. For channel listings click here.

6. I was surprised to hear your targeted demographic is ages 18-38. What does BTB offer that is appealing to this relatively young, and often unmarried, group?

A vast majority of the culinary media, particularly food content, is written and produced with women in their 40s in mind. These women are often focused on getting dinner on the table for their families. In recent years, particularly with the rise of food competition TV shows and increasing presence of chefs as celebrities rather than laborers, a younger demographic of both men and women have become interested in the entire culinary spectrum from food and nutrition to wine and cocktails. We specifically cater to this group since they are hungry for more content, information and inspiration.

7. Describe the ideal person who would complement both your life and your business.

Honest. Generous. Ambitious. Supportive.

And the kicker is…able to deal with a hyperactive adventurous workaholic who loves to eat:)

8. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Working, hopefully, not as hard as I’m working now but having just as much as passion as I have for my business and life today.

Divya’s Bio:

Divya Gugnani acquired a taste for her future in culinary arts while building a career in finance. In addition to a B.S. from Cornell University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, Divya holds a degree from the French Culinary Institute, where she discovered her inner chef. Divya started her career at Goldman Sachs and then worked at Investcorp International and Millennium Technology Ventures. Most recently, as a venture capitalist and Principal at Firstmark Capital, Divya provided companies with strategic and operational guidance to achieve their visions. Divya has also catered and worked in restaurant kitchens while managing her corporate boardroom responsibilities. With the creation of Behind the Burner, Divya blends her long-time passion for culinary arts with her expertise in business.

Divya currently advises several startups and established brands with board level roles. She appears on MSNBC: Your Business and NBC New York Nonstop. She has also been a guest on FOX & Friends and has been featured in Businessweek, The Wall Street Journal, The Deal, Crains, Eat. Drink. Better, and several other publications.

Zach Weiner says he is taking me out on the town in Chicago someday. Â I believe him, not just because he said he would, but because partying is as much a part of his lifestyle as are his three businesses. Â As the owner of MW Media, Luxury Reach, and GreedReviews.com, the 28 year-old CEO still found time this week to a attend a nightclub opening, street fest, art gallery, and last, but not least, a burlesque show.

In the past year he has also traveled, often backpacking along the way, through places like Morocco, Panama, and Portugal. Â Managers back home handle the day-to-day operations and call Zach, traveling with an international cell phone and laptop, with any emergent situations that may arise.

Now, let me ask you. Â Who wouldn’t fall in love with a young CEO running three companies who also finds the time to write his own (slightly edgy)Â relationship advice column? Â Not me. Â See you in Chicago.

1. We talked a little bit about your newest company GreedReviews.com, a peer-to-peer review site for investment information. Â Can you explain it better than I just did?

In basics, Greedreviews.com helps investors conduct due diligence on a wide variety of investment information sources and software. It is our mission to help cut through the clutter of thousands of financial newsletters, websites, and investment software platforms so that investors at any level can find the sources that can help them profit during a rough economy. Our crucial feature is that we enable investors to receive unbiased advice that has come from direct consumer insight or provide their own advice to help others in the investment community.

2. Some entrepreneurs seem to enjoy the startup process more than the ending business result. Â With three businesses already, are you addicted to the startup phase?

I lead my life in a constant pursuit to ban any potential boredom that could arise, I hate boredom. Â I tend to keep a wide range of diversity in what I do and this carries over to my business life. Â I love the inception phase of a company as it’s this point that really allows for potential to be at its peak and true creativity to flow. It’s a rush and it’s fun to brainstorm new ideas and new concepts. Â That said, there is nothing more rewarding then watching a company grow and achieving and actualizing that initial potential.

3. What advice can you give other startups, especially those with little or no funding?

I think the best wisdom I could detail would be on finances. The only relevant spending a startup should pursue in the initial stages of forming a new company is on the integrity of the product, the sales (or revenue source) and building relationships. A lot of new companies see their downfall due to extraneous expenses that they engaged in before turning a solid profit. Â Investing in large office space, useless personnel and flashy branding is a sure path to ruin if you are not ready for these items. Also, be passionate about anything you engage in- Always.

4. Which of your businesses do you have the most personal connection to and why?

I love Luxuryreach Inc – At its core the personality of that company is a lot like my own. We’re able to wear a lot of differing hats with Luxuryreach. Â We work with some of the most affluent brands in the world, so have to be polished, intelligent and sophisticated when we deal with our clients, but at the same time we are still an Ad agency which allows us to be creative types with a young and vibrant edge. Â One night I may attend a black tie Gala for a client and the next I might be at a small bar with a vendor wearing ripped jeans.

5. You obviously love to travel. Â Where will your next adventure lead you?

I’m planning on doing a month or two backpacking around Brazil. I never go with a real plan when I’m traveling, I usually find a place I want to go and then wander around trains, planes and buses in a random and chaotic pursuit of culture, fun and good food. Â Going with a plan keeps you stuck to a schedule and stuck to an “idea” of a place, rather than really getting to know its true vibe. Brazil has some great extreme sports, a wide range of geography and some cool little towns from what I hear, so I’m pretty excited to get myself lost.

6. Has being a single entrepreneur helped you or hurt you in business and why?

Being single tends to help business. Â For one there is no constraint on your time or resources. Â I have very little to tie me down and this can lead to productivity. Â Truth told there is also a lot of flirtation that can occur in the business world, and there is no reason to not take advantage of that fact. Â It depends on how you look at it and my perspectives can change. Â Relationships to me are a bright spot in what can sometimes be a dark world, and having someone to go home to after a long day can be better than any of these advantages.

7. Describe the ideal person who would complement both your life and your business.

I’m a laid back person who is also ridiculously ambitious. Â I look for somebody who is adventurous, honest and up for just about anything in life above all else. Â There is a lot of fun to be had and so somebody that can embrace its diversity and enjoy a multitude of activities usually works best for me. Â One day, I may be meeting with investors, the next I may be surfing and the one after that I might decide to go travel. Â I look for individuals who are passionate about living, laid back enough to be spontaneous, but also have passions in life that they pursue. Â Good looks never hurt either.

8. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I’d love to say retired on some beach in the Caribbean, but I know with my personality that just wouldn’t work for too long. Â Let’s say I hope to be living in a similar fashion as I am now as I Â have no complaints in life. Â I can see myself married some day, but in no way is it a necessity and it would have to be to the right person. Â I learn from the past, live in the present and like to keep my future open.

Zach’s Bio:

Zachary Weiner is currently the CEO of  the boutique advertising agency Luxuryreach Inc. and Owner of the website Greedreviews.com. He is the founder of  MW Media Inc.- A Financial Marketing firm as well as an author of several fictional titles and a world travel writer.  Currently Zachary spends his time working, kickboxing, rockclimbing and pursuing fun (and usually trouble) in foreign countries.

Today’s featured entrepreneur is Jackie Silver, or should I say my new BFF? Â Jackie and I recently met for the first time in Florida where she is known as the “aging backwards guru.” During our lunch together, she gently reminded me to stop frowning, Â gave me invaluable beauty tips, and just by her glow made me feel like I should be working harder to look…well, just like her! Â Not only does Jackie look young and feel young, but she girlishly throws around terms like BFF without sounding the least bit ridiculous. Only someone who is aging backwards can get away with that.

ps-check her out plugging MY product on the radio! Mother Ink Tampa Radio

1. At what age did you know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

I’m pretty sure I was BORN an entrepreneur. I’ve had plenty of my own businesses. We used to make a Halloween Horror House at a very young age and charge admission. I’ve started three businesses.

2. What is your product or business and how did you get started?

My business is AgingBackwards.com. The idea came to me in a dream…isn’t that how all the best ideas start?

3. What separates your business from the competition? In other words, what makes it special?

What makes my business special is that everyone wants to stay young and I know how to do it – then I tell you! I’m especially adept at finding the latest, greatest anti-aging and beauty breakthroughs, not to mention I’m personal friends with many of the world’s top experts in the industry. I get “inside info” to share.

4. What separates you from other business leaders? In other words, what makes YOU special?

What makes me different than other people in my industry?  I’m 50 and I still get asked for I.D. to buy wine. David Kekich, CEO of Maximum Life Foundation said, “Jackie is a poster child for anti-aging, so take her advice.”

5. What is a typical day like for you? Not just work, but the good stuff, too.

Typically, I work all day every day. Luckily, my work is tons of FUN and I love it!  When I’m not doing TV, radio or writing, I travel extensively meeting amazing people, having wonderful adventures, discovering new ways to keep Aging Backwards – I have the perfect life!

6. Has being a single entrepreneur helped you or hurt you in business and why?

I always say, “Two brains are better than one,” so even though I’m a single entrepreneur, I make it a point to seek out brilliant people to brainstorm and collaborate with.

7. Describe the ideal person who would complement both your life and your business.

The ideal person who would complement my business would be someone who is very business-savvy. I’ve got the content. I’ve got the ”staying young” down.  I’ve got the P.R. down.  My weak area is business.  So, any biz geniuses out there?  Feel free to contact me, wink.

8. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years?  I see myself living on the West Coast, taking a huge vacation (haven’t had a real vacation in years) that I’ve always wanted to take with Voluntourism.  That’s not a typo.  It’s a company that arranges vacations combined with giving back – perfect!  That’s what I plan to do for the rest of my life when I “retire.”
